The Moon Dwellers Birthday BASH

Today, The Moon Dwellers
by David Estes
turns 1 year old

It was 1 year ago today (June 30 th) that David Estes first published the first book in his first ever YA dystopian series, The Dwellers Saga, and changed his life forever. Since then, The Moon Dwellers has outsold and drawn more hype than any other of his 13 published books, and has risen to the top 10 of many YA dystopian lists on Listopia, finding a place amongst bestselling books such as The Hunger Games, Delirium and Divergent. The birth of The Moon Dwellers also changed David’s life forever. As he’s gone from struggling Indie author to fulltime writer, he’s watched in amazement as his Goodreads fan group has swelled from 300 members to over 1,300.

Since writing The Moon Dwellers, David has gone on to write and publish two sequels, The Star Dwellers and The Sun Dwellers, as well as three books in a sister series, The Country Saga (Fire Country, Ice Country, and Water and Storm Country). He plans to release the 7th and final book, The Earth Dwellers, in the combined series on September 5th later this year.

So what did David Estes want to do to celebrate The Moon Dwellers book birthday? His answer: “Give away as many free ebooks of The Moon Dwellers as possible!” So if you’re like so many others who are obsessed with YA dystopian novels like The Hunger Games, Delirium, and Divergent, and haven’t yet read the growing phenomenon that is The Moon Dwellers, now’s your chance to do so FOR FREE.
You can grab your free ebook of The Moon Dwellers from Smashwords.com using the coupon code below. And please feel free to share with your family and friends and pets, the more ebooks are given away the happier David will be. The only thing David asks for in return is that if you enjoy the read and continue on with the series, to please leave a positive review on Amazon.com for each of his books that you read.

And for those of you planning on reading The Dwellers and/or The Country Saga, here’s a special note from the author, David Estes:
The Earth Dwellers will cap off an eighteen month journey that has taken me from unknown Indie author to still-mostlyunknown fulltime Indie author. The change is a subtle one for most people, but for me it’s a dream come true. To the hundreds (and now maybe even thousands!) of readers who have come along for the ride with me, either by reading the Dwellers Saga, the Country Saga, or both, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Now down to business. There may be some of you who have only read the three books in the Country Saga or only the three books in the Dwellers Saga, and are now thinking you’ll read The Earth Dwellers, which is supposedly the 4th book in BOTH the Country Saga and the Dwellers Saga. Well, that’s awesome!
However, I must highly recommend that before reading The Earth Dwellers that you read the three books in BOTH series. Trust me, doing so will greatly enhance your experience, as The Earth Dwellers will be taking significant characters from both series and crashing them together (yes, like a water country wave) into an action-packed tale of struggle and loss and hope and friendship…and maybe a little love, too.
Anyway, that’s my advice, it’s up to you what to do with it. In any case, thanks for being a part of my own adventure, I’m a better person for having written stories for you!

David Estes was born in El Paso, Texas but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was very young. He grew up in Pittsburgh and then went to Penn State for college. Eventually he moved to Sydney, Australia where he met his wife and soul mate, Adele, who he’s now been happily married to for more than two years.
A reader all his life, David began writing novels for the children's and YA markets in 2010, and has completed 13 novels, 11 of which have been published. In June of 2012, David became a fulltime writer and is now traveling the world with his wife while he writes books, and she writes and takes photographs.
David gleans inspiration from all sorts of crazy places, like watching random people do entertaining things, dreams (which he jots copious notes about immediately after waking up), and even from thin air sometimes! Recently he’s been inspired by some of his favorite authors, like Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, and Maggie Stiefvater.
David’s a writer with OCD, a love of dancing and singing (but only when no one is looking or listening), a mad-skilled ping-pong player, an obsessive Goodreads group member, and prefers writing at the swimming pool to writing at a table.  He loves responding to e-mails, Facebook messages, Tweets, blog comments, and Goodreads comments from his readers, all of whom he considers to be his friends.

No Need to 'Hunt' for Enjoyment in Hunted!

Y'all should know by now I am a HUGE fan of this series,
and Oberon in particular.

Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6)Hunted by Kevin Hearne

4½♥'s, but fudged up since someone doesn't have half stars... hey wait, that's me that doesn't have half stars, right?  Well shame on me, I should fix that.

If you love the series, what is stopping you?  Hunted does NOT disappoint and throws more than a few curve-balls!

Atticus, Atticus, Atticus... what is UP with pissing off all the gods, and I do mean darn near ALL of them.  Well, I suppose with them taking offense at the drop of a hat, there's just no hope for it.  Must not forget a shout out to my favorite hound, Oberon, you deserve a sausage of the month club for being such a clever boy!  I'm totally using the 'Shepherd's Pie' thing in real life, be aware of that now.

We've already reached the sixth book in the series now, haven't we?  It seems like just yesterday I stumbled across book one and two in my local library and took a chance.  Tattooed, snarky Druid...  Where do I sign up? Best 'talking' dog ever... Well slap my *bleep* and call me Sally!  I loved them from the very first book and have eagerly followed the story of the highly persecuted druid.  Add the new feminine, but still 'fierce' druid and I'm in reader heaven... or wasn't there free beer in Irish Paradise? Could there be an Irish Reader's Paradise? *Here's hoping*

I do have to say, I loved it, I really did.  I feel the overall story across the series has been cohesive and Hunted was a great addition.  The reader gets tastes of Granuaile as a narrator on occasion, which was an interesting change in voice. But beware, this series must be read in order or you will run across ginormous spoilers with big pointy teeth.  While I do find the plot original and fresh, the intensive running, chasing, and the *my eyes- I can't unsee that!NONONO* moment.  I guess I was just feeling a little desperate, I mean how much bad karma can one druid have?  Tons.  Tons and tons of the worst luck roll ever.  He may as well be wearing a red Star Trek uniform and have a target painted on his back.

There was happily much of Oberon in this installment; between you and me I think Oberon is what makes this entire series.  He's the 'Shepherd's Pie' (see I warned you now about using that, didn't I?)  Playful banter, more gods than you can shake a stick at, fierce fighting, profound observations, manticores, and even a meat heist, what's not to love?  And while there is some romance, overall it's not a 'kissing book'.  There's just not really enough time for that, you see.

I will leave you with my favorite quote (and explanation of 'Shepherd's Pie')

"'Do you perhaps mean pi, the mathmatical symbol?'
No, Atticus, I mean shepherd's pie.  I'm not going to confuse that with math.  Shepherd's pie is delicious and desirable, and math is not."

Book #1, Stitch: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17617373-shudder

It's only been three days, and already everything is different.

Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.

And then there are the visions.

The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

The second installment in the electrifying Stitch Trilogy, Shudder follows Samantha Durante's shocking and innovative debut with a heart-pounding, paranormal-dusted dystopian adventure sure to keep the pages turning.

the first book in the series!

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around all the revelations, and questions Shudder contained.  Yet another noodle warp.  However, I will note that due to this story, I knew the world building would begin anew as if Stitch did not provide set up.  Stitch really did set it up, but like Neo found out in the Matrix, that rabbit hole is one freaky mother.

I do wish the romance aspect of the story would have been played up a little more.  I understand the reason behind it and there were moments... I think I've just been spoiled on romance with grand gestures.   While the world building in Stitch (#1 in series) all added into the tasty morsel of a book, somehow the recipe wasn't quite the same for Shudder.  I guess I was too eager to get to the 'meat' of the story and wanted to speed past some parts.  I was surprised, confused, hopeful, frustrated, elated, and flabbergasted at times while reading Shudder.  That is a sign right there.  Any book that can give you some sort of emotional roller coaster (but not a traumatizing one,) is definite re-read material.

It MUST be mentioned, however, the end (once again) cliffhanger city, but it didn't leave me angry.  On the contrary, I'm clamoring for more but willing to be patient for the story to have the time it needs to floor me!  It's a solid sequel to the first book, and will garner gasps at moments.  Button down the hatches, and take the plunge with this series!

I received a free eBook from Samantha Durante via CBL Book Tours in exchange for an honest opinion.

The Rockin' Chair Release Day!

Brief Synopsis:

Memories are the ultimate contradiction. They can warm us on our coldest days – or they can freeze a loved one out of our lives forever. The McCarthy family has a trove of warm memories. Of innocent first kisses. Of sumptuous family meals. Of wondrous lessons learned at the foot of a rocking chair. But they also have had their share of icy ones. Of words that can never be unsaid. Of choices that can never be unmade. Of actions that can never be undone.

Following the death of his beloved wife, John McCarthy – Grandpa John – calls his family back home. It is time for them to face the memories they have made, both warm and cold. Only then can they move beyond them and into the future.

A rich portrait of a family at a crossroad, THE ROCKIN' CHAIR is Steven Manchester’s most heartfelt and emotionally engaging novel to date. If family matters to you, it is a story you must read.

Early Praise:

The Rockin’ Chair is a heart-rending story of a family, separated by pride and ambition only to be brought together by the strength of their ability to grow emotionally and spiritually. Manchester’s flawless dialogue, warm characters and compassionate wit all service a moving story. He brings the Montana farm to life and reminds us that simple sentiments are often the truest. His contrast of the permanence of the landscape with the transience of human life leaves us with a feeling of wonder long after the final page is turned.”
- Corinna Underwood, Reviewer, Publisher’s Weekly

"The Rockin’ Chair is a tightly knit tearjerker.”
- Jon Land, NY Times Bestselling Author; The Walls of Jericho

“In The Rockin’ Chair, Steven Manchester has created a book that can change the world. If only everyone would listen to Grampa John and express their love for each other, what a different world it would be.”
- Heather Froeschl, Book Reviewer, BookReview.com

I am looking forward to reading my review copy very soon!
I think I need a good cry,
and it sounds like this might just foot the bill!

EXCERPT:

MADAM GRACE LEANED BACK IN ANNOYANCE. “Give me your watch,” she said.

Finding this alarming, I hesitated, wondering if she was going to steal it. But I gave it to her.

She held it to her cheek and closed her eyes. She said, “You are in a state of––how you say?—dull, mediocre. But that will not last. You––”
The doorbell rang and she got up. “Excuse me,” she said. “I must get that. Make yourself comfortable until I return.” Seeing my dismay, she smiled. “Don’t worry. I won’t be long.”
After she left, I peered out the window. A young, sallow complexioned man with dark hair stood on the porch.
I heard Grace speak loudly to him in a language I didn’t recognize. He answered her in that same language. Something about their conversation—not to mention the heat in the room—and the fact that she still had my watch, made me uneasy. It wasn’t because I thought she was after my money or that he might be in on it. That was a given. No, it was something I couldn’t put my finger on. I knew I should have run out then, watch or not, but moments later the woman came back, and it was too late.
“I am sorry you have been waiting.”
     “No problem.”
She sat down, closed her eyes, and again pressed my watch to her cheek. Then she opened her eyes and gave me back my watch. Taking a deep breath, she said, “I see that your boyfriend is crude––not civilized.”
     “That’s him, all right.”
“He has strange habits. Why do you put up with him? Why don’t you find someone better?”
I sighed. “I don’t know. I’m lonely. I can’t seem to find anyone else. I guess I like having him around and he said he would help me with my career. I like him, though he’s not what you’d call a good catch in the normal sense. What else do you see? Will I marry him? Will he help me with my career?”
“I see that you don’t really know men. You let them treat you like dirt.” She looked down at the cards. “It is because you never knew your father.”

Maybe she was psychic. “That’s true. My father died when I was a kid.”
“Beware. I see danger around you. There is a plot against you. For another fifty dollars, I will pray for you at the church in the mountains. Only I can break this dangerous spell.”
I knew I should have known better. But I was determined to get my money’s worth.
“Well, I have only the fifty for the reading. What about my career? I’m an artist. Is my boyfriend going to help me with my career? He has a lot of connections.”
She gave me an annoyed look. “Just keep painting, or whatever it is you do.”
Abruptly, she got up and went to the cardboard box. She took the lid off, reached in and pulled out a small blue velvet pouch. “I’m going to give you something to help you. It’s something I wouldn’t give to just anyone. It will bring you good luck. It is a medallion to wear around your neck.”
She took a necklace out of the box and held it up so I could see it. The medallion was large and irregular in shape. It looked cheap. Fake gold, most likely, and not worth more than a few dollars. The inscription on it was in some ancient language, probably Arabic. The chain, made of the same cheap gold, was much too long for it. It would probably hang down below my waist.
“Here, take it. Put it on.” She dangled it before me. Then she looked away as if she hated to part with it.
“Oh, I couldn’t take this,” I said. “It looks too expensive. I can’t afford to buy it from you either.”
“Please. I want you to have it. For your safety. There is a terrible plot against you." She held the medallion close to my face. "But if you wear it,” she continued, “you will have nothing but good luck from now on.”
She pressed the medallion into my hand. “Tomorrow night is the blue moon. If you put this on now, your good luck will begin with the blue moon. Take it. It’s your only chance. Since you don’t have the money for me to pray to the church in the mountains, take it. For free. I am only trying to help you.”
